Berkshire County Courthouses
If you've been arrested and are now facing charges before the Pittsfield District Court, the Northern Berkshire District Court in North Adams, or the Southern Berkshire District Court in Great Barrington, we understand that this is probably your first contact with the criminal justice system and a very frightening event. To learn more about your specific courthouse, go here.
The first thing that you need to do is realize the level of trouble you are in. Given how Massachusetts' "War on Crime" has generated national attention, how the number of misdemeanor cases prosecutors take to trial continue to increase each year, and how each District Attorney's office has begun to assign senior prosecutors to specialize in the prosecution of violent crimes, the first thing you should do - and fast! - is to hire an experienced and aggressive Berkshire County Criminal Defense Attorney.
There are many fine attorneys in Massachusetts. Some are good at speeding tickets, others are good at personal injury cases, or at filing bankruptcy claims. Who you retain to represent you with your Berkshire County criminal matter should be your top concern.

Don't Wait for Daylight!
At The Massachusetts Criminal Defense Group, our lawyers work around the clock. That means that you can contact us at any time of the day or night, seven days a week. Don't talk to anybody - the police, the prosecutors, even your friends - until you talk to us!
For a free case evaluation, call (800) 461-6900 or contact us online.
Once you hire our team, we'll ask that you educate us - and yourself - about every aspect of your case. We'll put a time-line in writing - starting from the events immediately prior to your arrest, through the arrest itself, and up to today - in as much detail as possible. This will be a great aid to your defense. The District Attorney's office will have their side of the story, and we'll have ours. You should never forget that you are innocent until proven guilty, and that the prosecution must prove every element of the crime - beyond a reasonable doubt - in order for you to get convicted.
The attorneys from The Western Massachusetts Criminal Defense Group have combined their experiences and have been representing people for over 30 years, with the majority of those years dealing with the drunk driving cases (OUI), drug possession, assault & battery cases, domestic violence, and gun charges that are among the more prevalent crimes that we see in the Berkshire County courts.
Our lawyers have a proven record of success in Berkshire County. We know the system, how each of the people in the system works - the police officers, the District Attorney's Office, and the Judges - and can, most often, predict their next move.
The District Attorney in Berkshire County is David F. Capeless. His office is responsible for prosecuting all criminal matters. Misdemeanors are typically dealt with at the district court level, and felonies are normally prosecuted in the Superior Court. The facts surrounding your case determine which court your matter will be heard.
Going to Court On Your Own is a BIG Mistake
Law enforcement thinks you have committed a crime, and the prosecutor wants to put you in prison. Having to argue against aggressive prosecutors to prove your innocence is not a task that any person should undertake alone. When you are facing legal penalties that could destroy or adversely impact the quality of your life, you need to ensure that you have an advocate on your side that has the experience, dedication and vigilance it takes to protect your freedom. Experienced and aggressive criminal defense representation in Berkshire County is just a phone call away - (800) 461-6900.
Typically, two judges sit in Pittsfield District Court - the Presiding Justice Fredric D. Rutberg and the Honorary Rita S. Koenigs. One typically handles trial matters - usually in the second session - while the other presides over evidentiary and non-evidentiary motions, pre-trial hearings, arraignments, pleas, restraining orders, probation surrenders and more. Those matters are usually resolved in the first session.
Attorney Clarissa Wright from our firm is a zealous advocate for alternative sentencing programs. With the assistance of Chief Probation Officer David M. McNeice and his team, Clarissa obtains electronic monitoring (ELMO) and house arrest, random drug and alcohol testing, community service work, drug or alcohol treatment programs, or anger management classes as options to keep her clients out of the Berkshire County Jail and House of Correction - located at 467 Cheshire Road in Pittsfield - a 288 cell facility with an inmate capacity of about 500.
