Nantucket County Courthouses
The Nantucket District Court is inside the Town and County Building on Broad Street in Nantucket. Most criminal matters are heard before the First Justices, the Honorable Joseph I. Macy and the Honorable Deborah A. Dunn. Felony matters are heard in the Superior Court. To learn more about each of the Nantucket Courts, go here.
Other than narcotic charges, assault & battery charges, and OUI
offenses, there are fewer than 700 criminal filings made each year on Nantucket Island. Notwithstanding the low volume, plea agreements and probation are common on Nantucket and Thomas Jekanowski is the Chief Probation Officer at the Nantucket Courthouse.
When accused of a crime on Nantucket, the first step in making certain your rights are protected is to enlist an experienced criminal defense attorney who knows his or her way around the Nantucket County court system. At The Massachusetts Criminal Defense Group, we encourage you to take this step immediately in order to avoid any time at the Nantucket County Sheriff's Department.
From Day One, our attorneys take strong actions to challenge any mistakes that the Nantucket Police Department - or other law enforcement agencies - made in your case. Police have been known to go too far, sometimes overstepping their authority. Similarly, the District Attorney's Office has been known to overreach in their charging decisions and the evidence they try to use. Let us confront them on your behalf.
What Are My Rights When
Police Question Me?
You have the right to remain silent. But, if you choose to speak, anything you say can be used against you in court. If you decide to answer questions, you may stop answering them at any time. You have the right to consult with an attorney before answering questions, and to have an attorney present during questioning. Since it's your right, you are well advised to invoke it!
Beware of the "Cooperation" Factor
Many people who have been arrested on Nantucket recall the officer telling them, "If you work with us, we can make things easier for you." But the officer has absolutely no authority to make things "easier" for you once he or she sends the report to the District Attorney. Any "perks" you get for cooperating - a cup of coffee, glass of water, or a cigarette - ends at the police station door.
